The vital role of the Pecka-Block in enrichment of the environment and the prevention of vices
Pecka-Block is a unique cereal-based poultry aid designed and formulated from wholesome natural ingredients that the birds could find in their natural habitat. The Pecka-Block is the only truly practical natural and yet scientific way in which vices can be prevented. Let us look firstly at the nature of, and reasons for, vices in poultry and also the certainty that there will be an ever-increasing need in the future. The root cause of the vices in one word is 'Intensification' and the vices that affect poultry include feather pecking and pulling, vent pecking and overt cannibalism. The condition tends to be as contagious as a virulent infection, birds copying each other and seemingly incited by the appearance at blood. Vices very often start up in a mild way with the pulling of a few feathers but, like drug addicts, the intensity increases and after a few feathers have been pulled, it goes on to vicious pecking of feathers, vents and eventually any part of the body. The result can be horrific injuries, morbidity and mortality.
The principal reason for using Pecka-Blocks becomes self-evident when one examines the causes of vices occurring. It is to prevent or treat these causes, and above all the best advice is to use the Pecka-Blocks to prevent. as this is very much easier than treating. Their cost is infinitesimal compared with the effects of a vicious onset of pecking and cannibalism. There will be huge benefits in terms of morbidity, mortality and production.
Then there is the crucial role the Pecka-Block has in ensuring the welfare of the birds. Great changes are emerging in poultry husbandry in which Freedom of movement, extra space, access to the outside and altogether more natural conditions are demanded. Mutilations like beak trimming are frowned upon or may be made illegal and cages will almost certainly disappear altogether in the next few years. However, all the 'new' systems involve birds freely able to practice vices is so inclined and undoubtedly the need for the Pecka·Block is enormously increased. We also know that a much more rigid enforcement of welfare rules and regulations are to be demanded in the UK Thus the poultry industry, in a way, is finding itself 'between t1 rock and a hard face' with systems developing which give the birds a greater opportunity to display vices yet more rigid avocation is being imposed on farmers to prevent them. It is fortunate indeed that the Pecka·Block, proven in practice to be efficient for all ages and Types of the species, is available as the safest and most effective I1ntldolu. Ills also relevant to record that trials at a British University Department and at prominent Integrators have confirmed the value of the Pecka·Block in providing the expected benefits from an enriched environment.
No matter the area of poultry farming you are operating within, all poultry is at risk to the sudden outbreaks of feather pocking loss, farmers have experienced far fewer problems where they have had continuously I1vnilnblQ the Pecka-Block for their flocks, and although the Pecka-Block should not be regarded as the magical solution for all vices, the Pecka-Block's availability has shown to Improve results while providing the welfare enrichment that is now required in farming
In addition to the effect on the sharpness of the poultry's beak, many more benefits are attainable for the poultry producer in ensuring his birds have constant access to the Pecka-Block. Reductions in the Incidents of feather pecking are being regularly achieved, light levels have been known to be in beyond those normally achieved without increasing aggressive behaviour. Pecka blocks are being suspended over slatted areas when birds first arrive on site to encourage the birds to these Areas. The twisting and swaying movement of the Pecka·Block will motivate other birds to those 'areas of interest' which could also be a dust/scratching area or on veranda.
When the poultry farmer makes the Pecka·Block available, 'areas of interest' are created for The birds, this immediately provides the 'environmental enrichment' and improved welfare conditions the buying public are expecting to see in operation on all farms.
The PECKA-BLOCK - providing the farmer with a practical solution for poultry vices - while meeting the need for improved welfare conditions.
